7 Storage Tips for Wedding Dresses

You may remember, when you were a young girl, taking your mom’s wedding dress out of her closet and trying it on. It is too bad that your mom didn’t take good care of that dress – storing it, hanging in a closet is one of the worst ways to take care of it. Wedding dresses are often made from delicate fabrics, and if they are to be stored for generations to come, they must be taken care of properly.

1 – Before storing your wedding dress, have it professionally cleaned. It may look clean, but it undoubtedly has either stains or odors that need to be removed before it is stored. Invest in a professional cleaning.

2 – Storing your wedding dress in a cedar box or chest is a tradition for many families. If you do this, make sure your dress is protected from direct contact with the wood. Otherwise, acids and oils from the wood can ruin the fabric of your wedding dress.

3 – It is best not to hang your wedding dress. Wire hangers can rust and destroy the fabric of your dress. Wooden hangers are better, but the sheer weight of a wedding dress can stretch the fabric and seams over the years.

4 – When storing your wedding dress, wrap it in acid-free tissue paper. Be sure to use white tissue paper, as colored tissue paper can bleed over time.
